SS The Dragon’s Quest for Hopper:: Chapter 13 : Heather and Dominik

The Dragon’s Quest for Hopper starts off as any other low brow elf seeking a real place in life.  He didn’t think the real place would be babysitter to a dragon.  Part of him wishes the dragon mother decided on eating him instead of shoving him into this new role.  What was he thinking getting involved with Linda or Hartliebe or thinking he deserved more in life than running a beer company.  Beer is his life.  Or it was.  His life now seems a lot different.  And scary.

Heather and Dominik

When we walk into the cottage again without knocking, the female elf looks over in shock.  Cyro holds up the rocks and flowers.  “I collected the pretties.  Where do they go?”

Her eyes widen further as I close us inside the room.  My voice probably sounds calmer than I feel, “I told him that the request was to get rid of the volcano, but he wanted to clean up even further.  Do you perhaps need volcano flora or rocks?”

She nods coming over.  “How did you come back so easily and without damage?”

Cyro hands the things over.  “Dragons live in volcanoes.  Well I don’t.  But my friend does.”  He glances at me.  “I’ll let you meet Barry after we are done with Terrick.”

“Okay…”  I look to Heather who organizes things.  “Why are you not taking over your mother’s work?”

“She does not want me to be alone.”  A small tight smile reaches for me.  Then her focus is on the flowers.  “Joshua is supposed to be my fiancé.  He refuses unless we can train him to take over.  It’s a big to do.  I told Mother to forget it.  She seems to think my husband needs to be a mage too.  Such crap.”  She blushes shrinking a little looking over at us.  “Sorry.”

I pull back waving it off.  “I don’t mind hearing you vent.”

“Ah, if only you were my husband choice.”

“I am magic less beyond the mark.”  I tap my arm where the dragonfly tattoo states I am claimed.  “Nor do I want to confine any elf to my looks and situation.”

She frowns looking me over.  “You are fabulous looking though.”

Me?  Fabulous?  I grimace.  She pulls me to a mirror.  When I look down at my body without the mirror I see my bulky looks, bedragged appearance, my disappointing proof of ill birth.  Inside the mirror, I could be called a god like presence.  What the hell…?  Cyro snickers across the room.  “This isn’t me.”  I point at the mirror.

“Who would it be then?”  She smirks winging a little across the room.  “I haven’t met anyone as gorgeous as you.”

I chortle.  Then it turns to a belly laugh.  The laughter goes on for a while making the elf pout a little during her work.  Once I calm down, glad for the laughter, I shake it off.  “This must be due to dragon magic.  Like glamour.  The best mages do that when bored.”

“Does that mean you’re bored?”  She glances my way.  “I can keep you busy.”  Her sly wink has my heart sink.  Something about her has me half wishing to jump and half wishing to back off.  Might have something to do with the volcano spell.  Or the fact I am claimed by a dragon who will get pissed to have to stay for any length of time.

Now, I know.  It has to do with her mother who believes that demon summoner is the rightful husband.  Yeah.  I do not want to mess with mages.  Mages are scary without including demons.  Amanda flashes in my mind.  “No thanks.  Once we get the key, we have other places to be.”

The door opens with the entrance of Veronica.  She glances at us, then sighs.  “You have the key.”

“I do?”  Cyro jumps looking over his body.

“It is not a physical key.”  Veronica frowns rubbing her arm while explaining.  “The key is a power strong enough to walk through fire and dive into the abyss.”  She bows her head.  “If you can do that, entering the isle will be easy.  Leaving, though, requires the physical key.  I do not have that.  As I said before.  I have the key, and yet I don’t.”

“We know.”  I nod to her.  “Thank you.”

Cyro bounds out of the door.  Veronica stops me as I try to follow.  Her whisper is for me alone, “He careful with him.  He is too young to be traveling alone.  And the Isle is a dangerous place.  I suggest taking a friend with you.”

Her strong determined expression leaves me a lot to think over.  As I walk into the sunlight again the only person I know who may help and may answer our plea is Cat.  No one else would be stupid enough to help Dragon Cyro enter a place like Isle of Terrick.  I sigh not wanting to ask Cat for any help.

First before we see about that sort of help, we need the key to leave.  And that is with…

Cyro answers for my head, “Onward to Kristen.”

“Yeah.  Kristen.”  I nod my head.  If my calculations are correct, then we will need several stops before reaching her.  And I would like a place to sleep during this trip.  That volcano was scarier than I will admit to.  Much scarier.  “Onward.”
