Proving Alpha Status’s POV
I’ve gone over POV before. I’ve made comments that first person present tense is my favorite way to write.
Which is how this book is written.
My werewolves almost need the first person perspective because the wolf soul inside is separate but uses the same body. To let my characters have real conversations with the wolf, first person narrative really ends up the best choice.
Each chapter states who’s perspective you are following for the character. The lengths of the chapters are dependent on how long that character would hold POV.
Most of the chapters are from Ryan and Stacy’s perspective, but not all.
When using switch outs with point of view, it’s important to make it very clear you are. New chapters are one of the easiest ways, but not the only way when switching perspective. And mind you, all POV changes need to be clear. If the narrator changes, you better let the reader know.
I used the chapter switch of first person with Dove too. [Tod Leben’s Dove: First Person/Switching Chapters] The case has similar situations. In Dove you want to feel and see the view of each character because of how they relate to each other. That’s also a concern here too. I want you to see how my characters view each other.
The wolf side, though, gets me writing all my werewolves as egotistical bastards… I mean in first person.
That’s a weakness of first person after all: ego. If I is present, you have ego to deal with. Trying to make sure the story is written with the proper level of ego isn’t easy.
I’ll suggest most writers to use third person limited. It’s the best of both worlds: a perspective that’s nearly first person, but without the concerns around ego.
I should write a true [Writer’s Stuff] post about POV again. I definitely didn’t cover all of it. Writing is such a complex skill.
